Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions

Welcome to the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection!

This area of the archive houses DARDOSIPCAT transcriptions that are not currently under embargo. These orthographic transcriptions correspond to the recordings in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Audios collection. The transcriptions constitute a form of documentary apparatus that facilitates future linguistic analysis of the audios.

Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions belong to two separate corpora (Vann Corpus 1995 and Vann Corpus 2017). The 1995 corpus includes partial transcriptions of initial linguistic interviews with individuals who, in 1995, were members of two distinct, naturally-occurring social networks in Barcelona. These individuals belong to the first generation of Catalans ever educated in their heritage language to grow up in a democratic Spain. The 2017 corpus contains transcriptions of longitudinal interviews with individuals from both of the 1995 social networks. The transcription conventions used in these corpora, which include italics for linguistic examples, underline for words in Catalan, and diagonal bracketing for overlapping text, are detailed in the general access resources available below.

All of the resources in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection have been created by research assistants and edited by at least two separate individuals (including the PI); however, the folks who drafted the transcriptions had diverse language backgrounds and linguistic training. Native speakers of Spanish worked on the transcriptions of all of the 1995 interviews, but only some were fluent in Catalan and none had any training in language documentation or discourse structure. Accordingly, transcriptions of the 1995 interviews include only rudimentary indications of overlapping and interrupted speech. Moreover, transcriptions of the 1995 interviews depended on the shortcomings of audiocassette recordings. In contrast, the transcriptions of the 2017 interviews were drafted by a single native speaker of Extremaduran Spanish who did not speak Catalan but who did have some training in language documentation and discourse structure. Furthermore, the 2017 transcriptions also benefitted from the advantages of (a) digital audio recordings and (b) Internet research on perplexing linguistic constructions.

Given these varied circumstances, we must regard all of the resources in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection as *MERE ROUGH DRAFTS* in terms of discourse representation, linguistic precision, and, especially, appropriate representation of Catalan words and expressions. Transcription is as much art as science, and DARDOSIPCAT respects the human condition. DARDOSIPCAT research assistants had honest intentions and made good faith efforts to faithfully transcribe the DARDOSIPCAT audios as best they could.

Informed consent has been given for all resources in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection to be made available anonymously for research purposes. Accordingly, potentially identifying information in these transcriptions has been redacted.

Any researcher who wishes to use one or more of the resources in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection in their research may download them in PDF format free of charge by setting up an account as an authorized DARDOSIPCAT user, which requires agreement to specific archive terms and conditions. No special software is necessary to search, view, download or open the resources in the Accessible DARDOSIPCAT Transcriptions collection.
