Abstract
Natural dyes have been used since at least 2000 years ago in several parts of the world, including India, Persia, China, and the Mediterranean. Until the introduction of artificial dye by William Perkin, everyone used natural dyes. Natural dyes are incomparable; they are alive because as time passes the colors also transform. Kusaki-zome, natural dyeing, has become part of Japanese art upheld by artists, such as Mr. Yamazaki, with whom the author met. This paper discusses the modern adaptation of traditional design and history of Kusaki-zome.
