Abstract
Writing workshop methods courses introduce teachers to foundational practices for teaching writing, yet their long-term influence on teacher identity and instructional decision-making often remains underexamined. This co-authored narrative explores how experiences within a graduate-level writing workshop shaped the pedagogical development of two educators: a professor who designed and facilitated the course and a former graduate student who went on to teach English Language Arts (ELA) in both elementary and higher education settings. Drawing on a 60-hour shadowing experience, the narrative analyzes classroom observations, reflective writing, and dialogic exchanges to illuminate three central themes: resonance, resilience, and effects that demonstrate how learning from a writing-methods course continues to reverberate across teaching contexts and career stages. Grounded in Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory (SLT) and David Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this manuscript shows how the course’s modeling, transparency, community-building, and culturally responsive writing pedagogy extended beyond a single semester to influence long-term instructional practice. These experiences are further situated within the broader expectations of writing-methods coursework in Florida teacher preparation programs, including attention to writing processes, foundational skills, explicit instruction, differentiation, genre knowledge, digital tools, and assessment. By pairing apprentice and mentor perspectives, the manuscript highlights how writing-methods instruction can meaningfully shape teacher identity, inform classroom practice, and foster sustained professional growth across diverse educational settings.
