Manuscript Preparation Guidelines
Manuscripts should be a maximum of 10,000 words (including citations, figures, and tables).
Submission Format
- Submit your manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single Word document.
- Do not include a title page or abstract. Begin the document with your manuscript text. A title page, including the abstract, will be added by the editors.
- Do not include page numbers, headers, or footers.
Page Layout and Spacing
- Page size should be 8.5 x 11 inches.
- All margins (left, right, top, and bottom) should be 1.5 inches, including tables and figures.
- Use a single-column layout with both left and right margins justified.
- Manuscripts should be single-spaced throughout, including references.
- Indent all paragraphs using the Tab key (instead of additional spaces), and do not insert extra spaces between paragraphs, except before a heading.
Typography
- Use 12 pt. Segoe UI.
- Use one space after all punctuation. (Use the Find and Replace feature to search for two spaces and replace them with one.)
Writing Style and Language
- We encourage authors to write in the first person.
- Use the phrase preservice teachers (rather than pre-service).
- Use abbreviations sparingly (e.g., do not abbreviate preservice teachers or educator preparation program).
- Ensure that the manuscript conforms to the NCTE Statement on Gender and Language.
Headings, Tables, and Figures
- Format headings, tables, and figures using APA guidelines (e.g., Level 1 headings are centered and bolded). Please pay particular attention to these guidelines and consult the Purdue Online Writing Lab for more information and samples.
- If figures are included, use high-resolution figures, preferably encoded as encapsulated PostScript (eps).
References and Citations
- Please use the most recent APA style guide to format references and in-text citations.
- Double-check to ensure all in-text citations are in the references and vice versa.
- Begin the reference list immediately after the manuscript text; do not start your references on a new page.
- Format references using left justification and a hanging indent (not additional line breaks and spaces).
- Use a DOI instead of a URL whenever available.
- If no DOI exists, include the URL instead.
- Place the DOI or URL at the end of the citation.
- Format DOIs as either:
- doi:... (lowercase label), or
- https://doi.org/...
- Use whichever DOI format is provided by the source.
- For URLs, include the phrase "Retrieved from…" before the URL.
Accessibility and Ethics
- Ensure that your manuscript is accessible. This video guide provides a good overview of accessibility in Microsoft Word. Please attend to the guidelines for headings, tables, and figures in particular.
- Consult the Responsible Use of AI guide.
- For research involving human subjects, authors are expected to keep IRB letters, consent forms, or other related paperwork on file, and they may be asked to provide them at any point in the review and publication process.
Before You Submit
- Copyedit your manuscript.
- Before submitting your article, you must edit your profile on the Teaching/Writing website to include your name and current institutional affiliation as you want them to appear in print. (Please do not include Ph.D., etc. in the suffix field.) To do this, go to the Teaching/Writing homepage, click on My Account, and click Edit Profile.
